AFRICA FASHION WEEK LONDON 2013 ANNOUNCES

DATES, VENUE AND PATRONS – NOW ACCEPTING

DESIGNER APPLICATIONS

Africa Fashion Week London 2013 Announces Dates, Venue and Patrons –

Now Accepting Designer Applications

The third edition of Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) returns on 1st-3th August 2013.

Following the unprecedented success of their sophomore event in August 2012, in a bid to

grow bigger, AFWL has not only expanded to three days but also moved to a bigger venue,

Old Truman Brewery F Block, a recently redeveloped and formidable warehouse in hip and

happening Shoreditch.

This year’s event is set to see 100 designers on the runway and over 100 exhibitors spread

across Old Truman Brewery’s massive indoor space. Once again, Africa Fashion Week London

is set to be the biggest fashion event across Europe showcasing African and African inspired fashion.

As well as these changes, another important change for Africa Fashion Week London comes

in the form of two patrons this year, Mrs. Fifi Ejindu, the Nigeria-based architect and

businesswoman and Yinka Shonibare MBE, the London-based globally celebrated Nigerian

fine artist were announced as the female and male patrons for next year by CEO and founder

of AFWL Ronke Ademiluyi on Tuesday, 4 December at the press preview of Studio 29, the first

Africa Fashion Week London concession boutique soon to open in Lagos.

“As the AFWL team we are excited about the third edition of the event due to hold next

August at the Old Truman Brewery and to have such highly renowned male and female

patrons who are both hugely successful in their fields and both supporters of African

fashion lending us their support for 2013. You can expect Africa Fashion Week London 2013

to be a much bigger fashion affair than both the debut and sophomore editions ” said Ronke

Ademiluyi, CEO and founder of Africa Fashion Week London.

The sophomore edition of Africa Fashion Week London held at London Spitalfields attracted

over 20,000 visitors over two days and garnered international media coverage while the

debut edition in August 2011 held at Gibsons Hall was a proof of the need for an Afro-centric

fashion platform in London, attracting 4,700 guest, far exceeding all expectations.

The Vodacom Durban July 2012 “Invited Designer Showcase”

This year SUZAAN HEYNS shall participate in the Invited Designer Showcase together with seven other handpicked designers. The theme for the event is sustainability and in fashion this means anything from the use of natural fibres to repurposing and upcycling, al in the name of going green. Fashion at the Durban July is still supposed to glitz and sparkle, the theme is meant to show support for being green.
The Vodacom Durban July is one of the most prestigious horse racing events in the world. The mixture of horse racing and fashion attracts over 50 000 people to Raceday from around the country and huge national media interest leading up to and after the event. The Vodacom Durban July Invited Designer Showcase brought to you by Canon is in its 27th year and has seen some of South Africa’s top designers participate. The event is one that allows designers the freedom to be totally creative, with no retail limitations. The designers’ collections are unveiled at two up-market Fashion Showcase events in Durban leading up to Raceday and on Raceday itself.
The collection featured an intricate black and cream spider-web paneled dress, whilst gold heavily accented the range with buckled panels restraining the body, in a corset like metallic bodice, made from upcycled  belts. Re-claimed gold bath-chain was draped in a delicate contrasting crystal shawl that added a demure feel to the collection.
Suzaan took inspiration from the opulence of art deco and old Hollywood glamour - an era where hedonism was at its peak, when materialism was rife. The collection shows labour intensive garment construction with attention to detail. Suzaan’s take on the ”Material World” translates into an unlikely use of reclaimed materials, to create opulence and glamour from every day items.
Each designer in the 2012 Invited Designers Showcase, creates a distinct and individual interpretation of the theme. Their work is unveiled at the Fashion Showcase on 20 June and again on raceday on the main stage at the Vodacom Durban July. Each is required to design a small range that consists of a showstopper and a raceday ensemble for a couple.

Loin Cloth and Ashes celebrates an African milestone with the opening of a flagship store

Johannesburg, South Africa – 1 July, 2012 marks the beginning of a new dawn in African fashion as Loin Cloth and Ashes champions the new wave of African renaissance with the opening of their first ever flagship store in the Maboneng Precinct, situated in the heart of Joburg’s new urban development.

Tanzanian-born Anisa Mpungwe, the creative design genius behind Loin Cloth and Ashes (LCA) is at the helm of this new revolution, creating designs that humbly show an intrinsic understanding of the new African woman.

The LCA store will bring a bright spark to the Maboneng Precinct, which is fast becoming the new hub for Africa’s creative spirit and provides just the perfect environment for people to come experience the LCA brand and flirt with the gorgeous garments.

“This is a big step for me and a daring move for my label.  I’m thrilled to have found just the perfect spot for people to come shop and try on our clothes. We’ve been working so hard towards this and I’m glad it has finally come. It’s been a divine journey,” says Mpungwe.

For women who don’t reside in Johannesburg, Mpungwe is proud to announce that along with the flagship store opening, LCA will also launch online via 36Boutiques.com on the same day of the launch, providing a virtual shopping experience for local and international clients.

In an industry that is dominated by established fashion powerhouses and male designers, LCA stands its own ground with a label that caters to urban Africa and tells the story of a more cosmopolitan African woman.

Mpungwe’s Tanzanian background, matched with her global travels and studies in fashion design, puts a stamp of authenticity to her use and understanding of African fabrics and qualifies her pride as an African designer.

True to the brand’s identity as a modern African label operating in a cosmopolitan African era, LCA teamed-up with a band of like-minded African creatives who are all part of the new African renaissance and passionate believers in shining the spotlight on the continent’s ingenious talent.

Mpungwe’s team features the Namibian-born and renowned international show producer Jan Malan of Umzingeli Productions. To complement Malan’s acclaimed showmanship; Mpungwe’s has hired the services of a pioneer in Afro-fusion music, the Mozambican-born Dino Moran who is a preferred DJ and music producer.

Loin Cloth and Ashes first burst on to the local fashion scene in 2008 when designer Anisa Mpungwe became the first black woman to win the Elle New Design Talent.

For Mpungwe, that was just the beginning of her journey. Since then, Loin Cloth and Ashes has appeared on the local catwalks along with making its debut on the international catwalks when she showcased at the prestigious New York Fashion Week as part of the Arise Magazine African Collective in 2010.

Mpungwe’s label has been adorned by an impressive list of clientele, including former South African First Lady Zanele Mbeki and the famed radio personality Anele Mdoda who has become the official ambassador and face of the brand.

Soon, women from all walks of life will be able to embrace a true African identity and embody a proudly African aesthetic when the Loin Cloth and Ashes store opens.

NEW ON-LINE RETATLER LAUNCHES ETHICAL AFRICAN  FASHION BOUTIQUE FOR
GLOBAL MARKET
London,  UK.31 May2012

UK-based retailer Sapelle makes its debut on 2nd June with the launch of its on-line boutique

Sapelle.com, selling contemporary womenswear and home d6cor products from African

ethical and fair trade brands.

This season's bold ethnic and tribal print trend has really taken root, with

more retailers bringing it into their mainstream collections. ln March, the'Marnifor H&M'collection,

which incorporated bold tribal patterns, was eagerly lapped up by crowds of shoppers. ASOS's

Africa collection, which goes a step further than just adopting tribal prints by taking production

to a fair trade factory in Tanzania, has even found its way into Michelle Obama's wardrobe.

Ali Hewson's Edun brand sells beautiful luxury pieces, some produced in Africa - with the aim

of supporting and highlighting fair trade. This is an innovative strategy that is gaining

supporters in high places. Vogue ltalia's Franca Sozzani's'Fashion 4 Development'campaign

highlights the benefits of supporting the fledgling African fashion industry; and her recent

collaboration with luxury boutique Yoox.com features a number of top African designers.

The global fashion market also has a growing number of retailers dedicated to selling African

labels, including Myasho which has built up a loyal customer base over the years, as a

leading African fashion retailer. Other players such as Agnes & Lola are responsible for

showcasing trendy young fashion from labels including London-based Chichia and Nlcwo.

Sapelle.com  joins

the fray as an on-line boutique selling contemporary African-inspired

fashion and home decor with a strong socially responsible ethos, showcasing a number of

African design labels that have previously had no route to the global marketplace.

Sapelle.com also sources stock from fair trade cooperatives and talented artisans from

around the continent who use sustainable materials and production methods.

A spokesperson for Sapelle.com commented, "lfs exciting that retailers continue to bring

African-inspired design into the limelight. We're very much a part of that movement and we

add to the mix by introducing African products that are both desirable and ethically made.

Our suppliers create beautiful, trendy and well-crafted products in a socially responsible way.

Most African design labels don't have a route to the global fashion market, mainly because of

logistical issues. And most Western retailers don't have the connections or the resources to

AFRICA FASHION WEEK LONDON 2012
3rd & 4th AUGUST 2012 AT LONDON'S SPITALFIELDS MARKET HALL

(April 2012) The second instalment of Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) returns on 3rd and 4th August 2012. Following the unprecedented success of last year's event, AFWL has relocated to London Spitalfields, recent winners of a Best New Open Space award. This year's event is set to be bigger and better with a larger venue, more designers and tons more exhibitors. This will be the first large scale event to showcase UK and non-UK based seasoned and emerging fashion designers inspired by Africa.

The showcase debuted last year with an impressive turnout of over 4,700 attendees, the two day extravaganza created an unparalleled platform for over 50 international designers to showcase their collections. With the Olympics this year, all corners of the world will be focusing on what London has to offer, on and off the race tracks. The time is now to highlight Africa as a frontrunner in the international fashion community.

Spitalfields Market is surrounded by independent shops, cafes, bars and awarding winning restaurants such as Canteen, Galvin La Chapell and Giraffe to name a few. With a capacity of over 10,000 visitors, Spitalfields is the perfect location for a two day display of fashion, art, music and food.

Ronke Ademiluyi, CEO of Africa Fashion Week London says:

'We were astounded by the level of support shown to AFWL last year. This time round, we are taking things to a higher level, with a bigger venue it's hoped the event will reach a higher magnitude. By promoting African fashion globally we hope to integrate African countries into the fashion industry and also contribute to the reduction of poverty by developing the fashion and textile industry'.

CHINEDESIGN and TD   are proud to present “Afrotropolis-Wanderland”- a fashion/ art show in celebration of Black History Month.  The event is part of the TD “Then and Now: A Celebration of Black History Month” which also lists the CBC as its media partner. The event will be held:
On:   February 4, 2012
From:  7:30PM to 11:00PM (Show will commence at 8:00PM)
LOCATION: 99 SUDBURY GALLERY
Located at:  99 Sudbury, Toronto ON, M6J 3S7
Admission: $20.00 in advance - $25.00 at Door
Under the creative direction of fashion designer Chinedu Ukabam, “Afrotropolis-Wanderland” is a fashion, film and art exhibition that is inspired by different periods in black history and celebrates the achievements of people of African origin.  Themes explored in this show will include images of resistance, African ideography, power of words and musical ancestry.  The inaugural presentation of Afrotropolis took place in April 2011 at Studio 561 in Toronto and was well received by the Toronto arts/fashion community and the media, getting favourable mentions in the National Post, Sway Magazine, 1LoveTO and others.
Of Nigerian descent, Chinedu draws inspiration from his cultural background and other African and diasporic influences in art, literature, and music.  Since returning from a two year hiatus to study in Paris, he has expanded on his initial street-wear focus and is becoming known for his elegant fusion of cutting-edge fashion with facets of African culture resulting in a style which could be described “modern traditionalism”.
In contrast to the first Afrotropolis show, which was primarily a solo effort, “Afrotropolis-Wanderland” is a collaborative project.  It will feature the work of visual artists Jimmy Chiale and Kalkdian Assefa specifically commissioned to be remixed as print textiles.  “Afrotropolis-Wanderland” will commence with the screening of an original short film co-directed by Chinedu and Marcos Fantu, then seamlessly blends into a fashion runaway featuring models wearing Chinedu’s designs and concludes with a live mannequin gallery that allows the audience to see the designs and the complementary set-design up close.  The event will also feature the SUPAFRIK pop-up shop that will allows visitors to purchase an original work of fashion or art inspired by the show.
“Afrotropolis-Wanderland” is a true celebration of Black History and how it has influenced Canadians of this generation.
